YouTube Chapter Generator

Format and validate your video timestamps into clean, ready-to-paste YouTube chapters. All processing happens locally in your browser.

One chapter per line. Supports 0:00, 01:25, or 1:05:30 followed by the title.

How to use

  1. Enter your video timestamps and titles (one per line).
  2. Use the quick-fix buttons if your timestamps are unordered or missing a 0:00 start.
  3. Click Copy Chapters and paste them into your YouTube video description.

What is a YouTube chapter generator?

A YouTube chapter generator turns a rough list of timestamps and section titles into a clean chapter list that you can paste into a YouTube video description. It can normalize common timestamp formats, check their order, identify missing titles, and warn about chapter rules that may prevent the list from working as expected.

YouTube chapters divide a video into named sections. When chapters are available, viewers can move between sections from the video progress bar and see the chapter title for each part of the video.

This tool does not watch your video, generate chapter topics from a transcript, or upload anything to YouTube. You provide the timestamps and titles; the tool helps format and validate them.

YouTube chapter requirements

For manually added chapters, YouTube currently documents three main formatting requirements: the first timestamp must start at 00:00, the description must contain at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

Rule YouTube requirement What this tool can check
First timestamp Start the chapter list at 00:00 Warns when the first chapter does not start at zero
Minimum number Include at least 3 timestamps Counts valid chapter entries
Order List timestamps in ascending chronological order Detects out-of-order or duplicate time values
Chapter length Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long Checks the gap between consecutive timestamps
Title Add a useful title after each timestamp Flags entries without a chapter title

The first entry is especially important. Even when the first real topic begins later in the video, the manual chapter list should begin at 00:00, for example 00:00 Introduction.

The tool can compare the gaps between the timestamps you provide, but it cannot confirm the duration of the final chapter unless it also knows the total video length. Always check the last chapter against the actual end of the video before publishing.

How to format YouTube chapters

  1. Paste your timestamps and titles. Enter notes such as 0:00 Intro, [1:25] Setup, or 4:10 Installation.
  2. Review the validation results. The tool can identify issues such as a missing 0:00 entry, too few timestamps, duplicate time values, out-of-order timestamps, missing titles, or gaps shorter than 10 seconds.
  3. Normalize or sort the list. If supported by the workspace, use the formatting and sorting controls to turn rough notes into a consistent chronological list.
  4. Copy the finished chapters. Paste the result into the YouTube video description and save the video details in YouTube Studio.

Manually entered video chapters override automatically generated chapters for that video. If you later remove the manual timestamps, YouTube may use automatic chapters again when that feature is enabled and the video is eligible.

Examples of timestamp formats

YouTube chapter lists are easiest to read when each line begins with a timestamp followed by a short descriptive title. This tool can normalize several common note-taking formats into one consistent output.

Input Normalized output What changed
0:00 Introduction 0:00 Introduction Already clean
[01:25] - Installation 1:25 Installation Brackets and separator removed
04:42 Configuration 4:42 Configuration Leading minute zero normalized
1:05:20 Final Thoughts 1:05:20 Final Thoughts Hour format preserved
Summary 12:45 12:45 Summary Timestamp moved to the beginning

Example chapter list:

0:00 Introduction & Overview
1:15 Prerequisites
3:45 Downloading the Repository
6:20 Local Configuration
9:50 Running the First Build
12:30 Production Deployment
14:15 Troubleshooting

The exact title wording is up to you. Short, descriptive chapter names are generally easier for viewers to scan than vague labels such as Part 1, Next, or More.

Why YouTube chapters may not appear

A correctly formatted timestamp list is necessary, but formatting is not the only factor that can affect chapter availability.

  • The first timestamp is missing 00:00. Start the manual chapter list from the beginning of the video.
  • There are fewer than three timestamps. YouTube requires at least three timestamps for manual chapters.
  • The timestamps are not in ascending order. Arrange them from the beginning of the video toward the end.
  • A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds. Increase the gap between adjacent chapter timestamps where necessary.
  • Chapter access or eligibility is unavailable. YouTube notes that creators who do not yet have chapter access may need Advanced Features access. Video chapter availability can also be affected by active channel strikes or content eligibility.

This tool can check the structure of the timestamp list, but it cannot determine your channel standing, feature eligibility, video content classification, or other YouTube account settings.

Use cases: when are YouTube chapters useful?

  • Tutorials and coding guides. Let viewers jump directly to setup, installation, configuration, testing, or troubleshooting steps.
  • Podcasts and interviews. Separate introductions, discussion topics, guest segments, questions, and closing sections.
  • Product reviews. Mark sections such as specifications, setup, testing, pros and cons, and conclusions.
  • Webinars and presentations. Divide longer recordings by agenda item, speaker, demonstration, or topic.
  • Long educational videos. Make it easier for viewers to return to a specific lesson or concept without searching through the full timeline.

Video chapters can also contribute to navigation outside YouTube. Google Search may show video Key Moments for some results, and creator-supplied timestamps can be one source for those moments. Their appearance in Search is not guaranteed.

Manual chapters vs automatic chapters

Manual chapters Automatic chapters
You choose every timestamp and title YouTube attempts to identify sections automatically
Added directly to the video description Controlled through the automatic-chapters setting
Useful when exact section boundaries matter Useful when you do not want to prepare timestamps manually
Overrides automatic chapters when provided Used when available, eligible, and not overridden by manual chapters

Privacy and browser-local processing

If the current implementation uses only client-side parsing, timestamp parsing, validation, sorting, and text formatting happen directly in your browser. The tool does not need a YouTube API key because it does not retrieve the video, transcript, or channel data.

Your chapter text, draft titles, and notes should not be included in analytics events. Analytics can record privacy-safe actions such as formatting, copying, or validation errors without recording the text you entered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for YouTube video chapters?

For manually added chapters, YouTube currently says the first timestamp must start at 00:00, there should be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

First check that the list begins at 00:00, contains at least three timestamps, is in ascending order, and gives each chapter at least 10 seconds. YouTube also notes that chapter access and eligibility can be affected by Advanced Features access, active channel strikes, or content eligibility.

Does YouTube require a dash between the timestamp and chapter title?

YouTube requires timestamps and titles in the description, but its official chapter instructions do not require a particular dash style. A simple format such as 0:00 Introduction is clear and easy to maintain.

Can this tool automatically create chapters from my YouTube video?

No. This tool formats and validates timestamps and titles that you provide. It does not download the video, read a transcript, analyze audio, or use AI to invent chapter boundaries.

Can I create chapters for a video longer than one hour?

Yes. Use an hour-based timestamp such as 1:04:22 Setup Part 2 when the video passes one hour. The tool can preserve or normalize hour-based timestamps in the chapter list.

Can the tool verify that every chapter is at least 10 seconds long?

It can compare consecutive timestamps and detect gaps shorter than 10 seconds. It cannot confirm the duration of the final chapter unless the total video length is also known.

Do manual chapters replace automatic YouTube chapters?

Yes. YouTube states that manually entered video chapters override automatically generated chapters for that video.

Do YouTube chapters guarantee Key Moments in Google Search?

No. Google may show Key Moments for some video results, and creator-provided timestamps can help identify sections, but Key Moments are not guaranteed to appear for every video or query.
