PDF to PowerPoint: Convert PDF Pages to Slides

Make a PPTX with one slide per PDF page. Editable mode puts the page text into PowerPoint text boxes on top of a picture of the page graphics. Visual mode makes exact picture slides with nothing editable.

Overview

What is PDF to PowerPoint?

PDF to PowerPoint makes a .pptx file with one slide for each PDF page. You choose between two kinds of slide. That choice decides what you can edit afterwards, so it is worth a minute to understand.

Editable text puts each line of text from the page into its own PowerPoint text box. The rest of the page, including photos, charts, shapes and background colours, becomes one picture behind the text. Visual slides turn each page into a single picture. They look exactly like the PDF, but nothing on them can be edited.

How it works

How to convert a PDF to PowerPoint

  1. Open the PDF

The tool checks whether the PDF has real text. If it does not, it switches to visual slides.

  2. Pick the slide type

Editable text or visual slides, plus the picture resolution.

  3. Choose pages

Convert the whole document or a range such as 3-12.

  4. Download the PPTX

It opens in PowerPoint, Keynote, LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides.

Under the hood

Why text does not appear twice

In editable mode, each page is drawn twice inside your browser. The first pass draws everything except text, and that becomes the background picture. The second pass reads the text with its position, size and weight, and writes it out as PowerPoint text boxes.

Because the background has no text in it, editing a text box does not leave the old words showing underneath. Slide size comes from the first page. A Letter landscape PDF gives 11 × 8.5 inch slides, and a 16:9 deck PDF gives 13.33 × 7.5 inch slides.

Use cases

Use cases

Recovering a lost deck

If only the exported PDF survives, editable mode gets the wording back into slides you can update.

Presenting a report

Visual slides let you step through a PDF report in presenter view with your notes, and it looks exactly as designed.

Building on a handout

Choosing a mode

Editable text or visual slides: which to pick

Pick editable text when you plan to change the words: fixing a figure, translating, or reusing bullet points in a new deck. The slides will look close to the PDF. Text may sit slightly differently, because PowerPoint uses its own font.

Pick visual slides when the slides must look exactly like the PDF: presenting a finished report, a design proof, or a document with unusual fonts. You can still add your own text boxes, arrows and notes on top in PowerPoint. File size depends mostly on the resolution setting; at "Standard", expect very roughly 100–300 KB per slide for typical pages.

Tips

Tips

  • Pick "Smaller file" for long documents you will email, and "Sharper" for slides shown on a big screen.
  • In editable mode, group or resize text boxes in PowerPoint if a paragraph was split into separate lines.
  • For a scanned PDF, run OCR PDF first if you want editable text. Visual slides work on scans as they are.

Limitations

Limitations

Only text becomes editable

Pictures, charts, tables and shapes stay inside one background image. They are not rebuilt as PowerPoint objects.

One text box per line

Paragraphs come through as separate lines, so text does not reflow when you edit it.

Fonts

Embedded PDF fonts are not copied into the PPTX. Text uses a common font of the same style, so line lengths can differ slightly.

One slide size

A PPTX has one slide size. Pages with a different shape are fitted and centred.

Privacy

Privacy

Pages are rendered and the PPTX is built in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded to TryFormatter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to edit everything on the slides?

No. In editable mode only the text is editable. Photos, charts, shapes and backgrounds become one picture behind the text. In visual mode nothing is editable, and each slide is a single picture.

Why did my PDF get picture slides even though I chose editable text?

The PDF has no selectable text. It is probably a scan or was exported as images. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert again.

What slide size will the PowerPoint use?

The size of the first converted page. A US Letter landscape page gives 11 × 8.5 inch slides, and an A4 portrait page gives 8.27 × 11.69 inch slides. Pages with a different shape are fitted and centred.

Does it work with Google Slides and Keynote?

Yes. The file is a standard PPTX, so Google Slides, Keynote and LibreOffice Impress can open it as well as PowerPoint.
