Redact PDF: Permanently Remove Sensitive Information

Mark areas by drawing boxes or by searching for a name or number, review them, then apply. Pages with redactions are rebuilt as images with the marked areas filled in, so the text underneath is gone, not just covered. The output is checked before download.

Overview

What is Redact PDF?

Redact PDF removes sensitive information from a PDF permanently. That includes names, account numbers, addresses, signatures and whole areas of a page. Once a file is redacted, the hidden content cannot be copied, searched or extracted from it.

That last part is where most quick fixes fail. Drawing a black rectangle over text in an editor only hides it on screen. The words are still in the file, and anyone can select them, copy them, or paste them into another program. This tool does not just cover text. It rebuilds every page you redact, so whatever was under a box no longer exists in the downloaded PDF.

How it works

How to redact a PDF

  1. Open the PDF

The first page opens, with all pages listed beside it.

  2. Mark what to remove

Search for a word or number to mark every match, or drag boxes over signatures, photos and other areas.

  3. Review every page

Marked areas show as dark boxes with a gold outline. Click a box to remove it.

  4. Apply, verify, download

The redacted file is checked automatically. You can download it only after every check passes.

How removal works

Why redacted pages become images

Text in a PDF can be stored in many places: the page itself, embedded sub-documents, form fields, comments, link targets and metadata. Cutting individual words out of all of those reliably is hard, and a missed spot means a leak.

So the tool takes the approach that can be checked. Each page with a redaction is drawn as a picture, and the marked areas are painted solid black into that picture. The page is then replaced with a brand-new page that contains only the picture. Fonts, text, vector graphics, links, comments and form fields on that page are all gone. Pages without redactions are copied unchanged, so they keep their selectable text.

Removed on redacted pages
All text (not just the boxed part), fonts, links, comments, form fields, embedded objects.
Removed from the whole file
Title, author, subject, keywords and XMP metadata; annotations on every page.
Kept
The look of every page; selectable text on pages with no redactions.

Examples

Examples: what the verification checks

After applying, the tool reopens its own output and runs these checks. If any check fails, the download is blocked.

Check What it does
No text on redacted pages Extracts text from every redacted page and expects none.
Terms absent from text Searches the whole document's text for every term you searched and every word that was under a box.
Terms absent from file bytes Scans the raw file for those terms, to catch leftovers outside the page text.
Metadata cleared Confirms title, author, subject and keywords are empty.

Tips

Tips for safe redaction

  • Search for every form of a value: "123-45-6789" and "123456789", "J. Smith" and "Jane Smith".
  • Scanned pages have no searchable text. Step through them and draw boxes by hand.
  • Check headers, footers, stamps and signatures. They are easy to miss.
  • After downloading, open the file, press Ctrl+F, and try a few redacted terms yourself.
  • Keep the original in a safe place. Redaction cannot be undone in the output file.

Limitations

Limitations

Selectable text is lost on redacted pages

The whole page becomes an image, not only the boxed areas. Use OCR PDF afterwards if you need that page searchable again. OCR will not bring back the redacted parts.

You choose what is removed

Search finds exact text matches. It does not detect personal data by itself, and it cannot see text inside images.

File size

Image pages are larger than text pages. Use 150 dpi for smaller files, or 300 dpi for small print.

Not legal advice

The tool removes what you mark and checks the output. Deciding what must be redacted is up to you and your organization's rules.

Privacy

Privacy

Searching, flattening and verification all happen in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded to TryFormatter, so the sensitive content you are removing is not sent anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is drawing a black box over text the same as redacting it?

No. A box drawn in a normal PDF editor only covers the text visually. The words stay in the file and can be copied or searched. This tool rebuilds redacted pages as images, so the covered content is removed from the file.

Why can I no longer select text on the redacted page?

Every page with at least one redaction is converted to an image. This is how the tool guarantees nothing under the boxes survives. Pages without redactions keep their selectable text.

How do I know the redaction worked?

The tool reopens the output and checks that redacted pages have no extractable text, that your search terms appear nowhere in the text or the raw file, and that metadata is cleared. The download stays blocked unless all checks pass. You can also search the downloaded file yourself.

Can I redact a scanned PDF?

Yes, by drawing boxes by hand. A scan is an image, so text search will not find anything unless the file already has an OCR text layer. If it does, that layer is removed on redacted pages as well.

Can a redaction be undone after downloading?

No. The content under the boxes is not in the downloaded file. Before applying, you can remove boxes, undo, or clear them all. Keep your original file if you might need it.
