Overview

What is Rotate PDF?

Rotate PDF turns pages that open sideways or upside down so they read correctly, and saves that orientation into the file. You can rotate the whole document or only the pages you choose.

Rotating the view in a PDF reader only lasts until you close the file. This tool writes the change into each page's rotation setting, so the corrected orientation shows up in every reader, on every device, and when the file is printed.

How it works

How to rotate PDF pages

  1. Open the PDF

Choose the file. Every page appears as a thumbnail in its current orientation.

  2. Pick pages

Click thumbnails or type a range such as 2, 5-7. With nothing selected, the buttons apply to all pages.

  3. Rotate

Use 90° left, 90° right or 180°. Thumbnails turn immediately and show a +90° style badge.

  4. Download

Save the rotated PDF. Pages you did not touch are left exactly as they were.

Examples

Examples: which rotation to use

Rotation adds to the page's current setting, so the result depends on where the page starts.

What you see Button Stored rotation Page box
Portrait scan is upside down 180° 0° → 180° 612 × 792 pt stays 612 × 792 pt
Landscape table reads bottom-to-top 90° right 0° → 90° Displayed as 792 × 612 pt
Page already rotated 90° but still wrong 90° left 90° → 0° Back to its original shape
Phone photo of a receipt lying sideways 90° left 0° → 270° Width and height swap on screen

What changes

Rotation without re-rendering

Every PDF page has a /Rotate entry that tells readers how to turn it for display. This tool changes only that entry, in steps of 90°. The page content, fonts and images are not redrawn or recompressed.

Because of that, text stays selectable, the file size barely changes, and the page's MediaBox (its real dimensions) stays the same. Readers swap width and height on screen when a page is turned by 90° or 270°.

Mixed scans

A batch scan where a few pages went in upside down. Type their numbers, press 180°, and the rest of the document is untouched.

pages 4, 9 +180°

Wide spreadsheets and drawings

Exported landscape sheets sometimes land in a portrait file sideways. Rotating them 90° makes them readable without scrolling sideways.

pages 3-6 +90°

Uploads to portals

Some upload forms show the first page as a preview. Fixing the orientation first avoids a rejected or hard-to-read submission.

Troubleshooting

When a rotated PDF still looks wrong

The page turned, but the content inside is still sideways. Some scanners and phone apps place a sideways photo on an upright page. In that case the page box is fine and the image itself is rotated, so turning the page 90° makes the page landscape while the picture becomes upright. Check the thumbnail: if it now reads correctly, the result is right even though the page shape changed.

A viewer ignores the rotation. Nearly all readers honour the page rotation setting, including Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and mobile viewers. A few image-conversion services and older print drivers read the page content directly. If one of those shows the old orientation, open the file in a standard reader to confirm the rotation was saved.

Text selection feels odd after rotating. Selection follows the reading direction of the text on the page, so on a page you turned 90° the selection highlight runs along the new orientation. Copying and searching still work normally.

Tips

Tips

  • Use the rotate buttons on a single thumbnail for one-off fixes, and the side panel for groups of pages.
  • Pressing 90° right four times returns a page to where it started, and the badge disappears.
  • Reset clears all pending rotations if you want to start over.
  • If a page is not just rotated but also in the wrong position, use Organize PDF, which handles both.

Limitations

Limitations

90° steps only

The PDF format only supports page rotation in multiples of 90°. Straightening a slightly crooked scan (deskewing) needs image processing and is not done here.

Locked files

Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked with their password first.

Signed documents

Changing a digitally signed PDF invalidates the signature, as any edit would.

Privacy

Privacy

Rotation is applied with JavaScript in your browser. The page does not upload the PDF to TryFormatter, and the file is cleared from memory when you close the tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the rotation permanent?

Yes. The new orientation is written into each page of the downloaded file, so it opens the right way in Acrobat, browsers, phone viewers and when printed. Your original file is not modified.

Can I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Yes. Use the rotate buttons on that page's thumbnail, or type its number in the Pages box and press a rotate button. Other pages keep their current orientation.

Why did a page that was already landscape turn the wrong way?

Rotation is added to whatever the page already had. A page stored with 90° rotation becomes 180° after another 90° right. Press 90° left to undo one step, or Reset to clear every change.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Only the page rotation setting changes. Text, images and vector graphics are not redrawn, so quality and file size stay essentially the same.

Can I rotate a page by 45 degrees?

Not with this tool. PDF page rotation only allows 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°. Correcting a slightly tilted scan requires deskewing the image, which is a different process.
