Fill Canvas or Fit Image

The two framing options control how the source image is placed inside the vertical canvas.

• Fill Canvas: Covers the complete 1080 × 1920 frame while keeping the original proportions. Some areas near the outer edges may be cropped.
• Fit Image: Keeps the complete source visible. Any unused area is filled with a white, black, transparent or custom background.

Use Fill Canvas for an edge-to-edge story. Use Fit Image when no part of the original image should be removed.

How to Position a Photo in a Vertical Story

Moving a landscape or square photo into a tall frame can place faces and important objects outside the visible crop.

• Drag the image: Move the source directly inside the preview to place the main subject.
• Adjust the zoom: Increase zoom to remove extra background or reduce it to show more of the source.
• Use the position controls: Fine-tune horizontal and vertical placement when dragging is not precise enough.
• Check the edges: Make sure faces, products, logos and other important details are not cut off.
• Preview at phone size: Review the smaller preview before creating the final image.

Using the Story Safe-Area Guide

Story interfaces can place profile information and controls over the top and bottom parts of an image.

The safe-area guide marks an inner section where important content is less likely to sit close to these interface areas.

The guide is a visual aid and may not match every app version, device or placement exactly.

JPG or PNG for Instagram Stories

Choose the output format based on the type of image you are resizing.

• JPG: A practical choice for photos and detailed backgrounds. It usually creates a smaller file and supports adjustable quality.
• PNG: Useful for graphics, screenshots, logos, sharp text and transparent backgrounds. It may create a larger file.

A transparent background requires PNG. JPG always uses a solid background.

How to Reduce Story Image File Size

Choose JPG and lower the quality slightly when the generated image is larger than required.

You can also enable Maximum File Size and enter a KB or MB value. The tool will try to create a result at or below the selected limit while keeping the output dimensions at 1080 × 1920 pixels.

Very small limits may reduce clarity. When the target cannot be reached, choose a larger limit or switch from PNG to JPG.

Common Instagram Story Cropping Problems

• The subject is cut off: Move the image or reduce the zoom before creating the result.
• The image looks stretched: Use Fill Canvas or Fit Image so the original proportions remain unchanged.
• Empty space appears: Switch to Fill Canvas or choose a suitable background for Fit Image.
• Important details are near the edge: Reposition them inside the safe-area guide.
• The output looks blurry: Use a larger source image and avoid very low JPG quality.
• Transparency is missing: Select PNG because JPG does not support transparent backgrounds.
